In a historic decision, the federal government of Pakistan has elevated Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Syed Asim Munir to the rank of Field Marshal – the highest military rank in the Pakistan Army.
The announcement followed a federal cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. This promotion recognizes General Munir’s exceptional leadership and strategic command during Pakistan’s recent military confrontation with India, particularly in the successful execution of Operation Bunyan-um-Marsoos.
Leadership During Operation Bunyan-um-Marsoos
Officials credited Field Marshal Munir for his decisive role in defending national security and orchestrating a comprehensive military response. A statement from the Prime Minister’s Office praised his “exemplary courage and leadership” throughout the operation, which reportedly neutralized multiple hostile threats and thwarted adversarial objectives.
The federal cabinet unanimously endorsed the proposal, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressing gratitude to the armed forces and the people of Pakistan for their unity and resilience during the national crisis. President Asif Ali Zardari was also consulted before the decision was finalized, reflecting civil-military consensus.
Recognition of Armed Forces and Martyrs
The cabinet paid tribute to the coordinated efforts of the armed forces during the conflict and honored the Shuhada (martyrs) who laid down their lives for the nation. High-level national awards were announced for military personnel, civilian contributors, and all those involved in the defense of Pakistan’s sovereignty.
The rank of Field Marshal, marked by five stars, is a rare honor in Pakistan’s military hierarchy and is reserved for individuals demonstrating outstanding wartime leadership.
Field Marshal Munir’s Statement
In a message issued through Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Field Marshal Asim Munir expressed gratitude to Allah, the nation, and Pakistan’s leadership. “This recognition belongs not to me alone, but to the entire nation and the Armed Forces of Pakistan,” he stated, dedicating the honor to martyrs, Ghazis (veterans), and the people of Pakistan.
Details of the Pakistan-India Conflict
The recent hostilities were triggered by a deadly attack in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir, which killed several civilians. India blamed Pakistan, although no public evidence was presented. In retaliation, India reportedly conducted unannounced airstrikes on Pakistani territory on the nights of May 6 and 7.
Pakistan’s response came on May 10 with the launch of Operation Bunyan-um-Marsoos, targeting Indian military installations. According to ISPR, the operation resulted in the downing of six Indian fighter jets, including three Rafale aircraft, and the destruction of multiple drones.
An 87-hour confrontation ensued, ending with a ceasefire mediated by the United States. Official sources confirmed 53 Pakistani casualties, including 13 military personnel and 40 civilians.
Other Key Military Developments
In a related move, the cabinet also extended the service tenure of Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Babar Sidhu, acknowledging his leadership during the recent conflict.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to recognizing the sacrifices and efforts of all who contributed to safeguarding Pakistan’s sovereignty.
